While I am not an expert on human evolution, I did take a course in it in college. All of the fossil evidence for several millions of years show 5 digits. Some have an opposable big toe, some do not. I am not aware of an evolutionary trend for the 5th toe to disappear. The toes serve as points of insertion of both extrinsic and intrinsic muscles which function to balance and propel the foot during locomotion.Hope this helps.
