Sprained Ankle

(2 discussions)

January 24th, I sprained my ankle and saw an orthopaedic doctor the following day and he said it was just a severe sprain and should be back to normal in a couple weeks.
Now, it is basically back to normal except for some very mild pain and tightness in some positions which I expect.
The abnormal thing is that it is still swollen compared to my other ankle (around 100% larger).
By swollen, I mean that the lateral malleolusis is larger and it is not soft but very hard.
It is almost like more bone has added to it!
So my question is if this is normal or should I go back to the doctor and have it checked out? (I am a 22 year old male and did this while playing racquetball) Thanks!

Hi Walt, I too had what was termed a severe ankle sprain (I had complete rupture of the ATFL and CFL and a slight tear in the other one). This happenend in August 05, I had arthoscopic surgery at the end of Nov. it was called an ankle synovectomy. Still to this day I have pain, limited ROM and swelling, my orhto said to expect the ROM not to get any better (after alot of PT I kind of hit a wall with ROM) and the swelling might or might not get any better.. I would recommend going back if you are still unsure of how you are healing, it cannot hurt to have it checked again!Good LuckKristie

It sounds like you really had a bad sprain! I do not think that mine is quite that severe since I have my normal range of motion back and the pain is negligible. The only problem with mine is the ankle bone becoming larger. I am hoping that as time goes by it will reduce in size. Best of Luck!
