sternum crack

(2 discussions)

I’ve been lifting weights for around 4 years now. Everything has been normal until yesterday afternoon I was doing inclined bench, and I brought the weight down to my chest, hearing a very loud crack, or maybe even several cracks.
It happened very quickly so i’m not sure.
My friend who was spotting me grabbed the weight off me and put it back on the rack, and at first my chest felt fine. But later in the day I started noticing pain when laughing and especially when i’m doing crunches or sitting up.
Putting pressure on it hurts some, but I can tolerate it.
What did I do to myself and what can I do to make it better?
When i’m doing normal everyday things it feels fine, even sit-ups don’t hurt, but laughing and sitting up are brutal.
Please help.

It’s ok. A lot of people crack too. I myself have trouble sleeping, because it hurts unless I’m all stretched out on my back.

While wrestling on floor with the kids I was punched in the center of my chest…several days later every time I breathe in or ehale it hurts painfully….laying flat also hurts…ibuprophen helps but not much… What can I do to ease the pain? Should I go back to work, or will that make it worse????
