Straightening Out My Knee

(3 discussions)

I had ACL surgery last April and I went to physical therapy for a couple of months afterwards. I was supposed to continue my p.t. at home and by working out at my college’s gym but I never did.
I can’t straighten out my knee all the way and I was wondering if stretching out my hamstring wil be able to help me with this problem.

I have the same problem…only mine was a result of a herniated disc which turned into sciatica. I have not stood on my leg for more than a year. It feels like a tight rubber band behind my knee; as a result I have been in a wheelcair for a year…no pain just extremely tight. I need to be able to straighten my leg so I can then begin to strengthen an extremely atrophyed limb. I feel some cross activity. I have a background in fitness.PLEASE HELP! no surgery…just excercise.

Stretching your hamstrings will help a little, what you should do is buy an ankle (7-12LBS) sand weight and drape it acoss the top of your knee while it is straight and keep it in this position for 10-15 minutes, this will force the knee backwards and stretch it out. It is very important that you get your knee straight.

I had that problem after my surgery in Feb 04. I fixed it by sitting down with my legs in front of me, and pushed down on my knee, it hurt but it worked. Also I would put one leg on the bed with my heel sitting on the edge. then I would press down on my knee, like before, it hurt but it worked. Also try rolling up a towel and putting it under your heel while sitting down. It is a bit uncomfortable but it will slowly bring your leg back to 0 Deg.
