surgery

(4 discussions)

after living with an overlapping little toe on my left foot for 41 years I am finally going to have it corrected this month. pretty anxious about the results of the surgery. I have never known what it is like to be able to go barefoot without someone staring at my toe. mine overlaps farther than any I have ever seen. doc is confident he can make it lay where it is supposed too! it is going to be interesting!

My conscience would not let me ever recommend an amputation for this. Good luck.

This is not that uncommon a deformity. I had a patient bring their newborn in on the way home from the hospital with the congenital overlapping 5th toe. I showed her how to tape the toes everyday for several months. It straightened out. I saw the child yeatrs later and the toe was straight so I know the taping worked. I have noted in some of these deformities, the pulp of the 4th and 5th toes have shifted from years of pressure. Sometimes the nails are also deformed and that doesn’t change.
This is alot more work than most patients imagine it is. Good luck.

Thanks for the info doc. My podiatrist has done a few of these and sure seems confident. Mine overlaps farther than anyone I have ever seen. Tip of my little toe actually touches my third toe! cannot see the fifth toe from bottom of foot. If my little toe looks half way normal after the surgery I will be happy. I will let you know how it goes. one podiatrist that I did see reccomended amputation, said surgery would not work. this doc says simple half hour surgery. Kinda makes me wonder, but I am willing to try. thanks.

do you think having a pin put in to hold the toe straight is almost a certainty in most overlapping fifth toe corrections?
