surgery or not

Hi doctor–i have a jones fx.5th metatarsal bone-from merely twisting my foot while walking. My podiatric surgeon thinks surgery is my best option because of the location of the break(base), and it is a clean break.
He says the 6 week casting does not always work–this area has a poor blood supply.
I’m scheduled for an open reduction and screw fixation this Friday–seems like my best option. Some of my friends think I should go to an orthopedist, but I thought a podiatric surgeon would be better because this is his area of expertise.
I’m very nervous about surgery–does it usually work? a penny for your thoughts.Maureen

What you doctor has discussed with you is considered a standard of care for a Jones fracture, whether it is an orthopediat or podiatrist saying it. As far as your choice of who treats you. Podiatrists are foot specialists. Orthopedists who do general orthopedics have little training in the foot relative to the rest of the body. There are some orthopedists who do specialize in the foot and ankle. There certainly is overlap in this area. In summary, you should be comfortable with whoever treats you, understand it won’t be a picnic. Hope this helps
