swelling and pain in knuckle of middle finger, doc thinks it is arthritis but I am not sure

For the last couple of months, my knuckle on my middle finger is swollen and it hurts when I bend it or when pressure is placed on the top of the knuckle. There is also a clicking noise when I straighten the finger, a new symptom as of the last few days.
I showed it to the doc. and he thinks it is arthritis because I do not recall ever injuring the finger and so there was never any bruising. Could there be a torn tendon or a broken bone? Any advice would be most appreciated as my doc. never suggested that I should have an x-ray.
