swollen “big toe” joint

(3 discussions)

i woke up one morning and the first joint, where my big toe is connected to my foot, was swollen and red.
it was so swollen that I had to walk on the ouside edge of my foot.
it also seemed to be filled with fluid.
i went to my local podiatrist who drained it and injected it with something.
the doctor took the fluid and did some bloodwork, both to be analized for arthritus. in the meantime the swelling has gone down but my now semi-swollen toe joint has become hard.
i went back to my doctor and he said that my test results were negative for arthritus and that he dosen’t know what is wrong.
he’s concerned that the tissue is hard and he want’s me to get an MRI.
he’s mention a possible tumor or small fracture…keep in mind that I had just woke up one morning like this!
so I find it strand that a tumor could pop up or a fracture could happen in my sleep, but then again, whoknows!? I can tell you that I wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary.
all I had done the day before is some walking.if you could please try and make sense of this, i’d truly appreciate it. i’m also thinking that I should get a second opinion.
what do you think?

From your description, one possibility might be gout. If the lab tested for uric acid crystals and there were none, then that might rule it out. Another remote possibility is pseudogout (rare) or even rheumatoid arthritis. I recommend you see a rheumatologist if you are not getting anywhere.
