Swollen itchy toes

(5 discussions)

Dear Doc,It’s been about 2 weeks that 3 smaller toes of each of my foot became red/purple, itchy, and swollen. This only affects the top part of the toes (by the cuticles on the first knuckle).Although I live in the midwest but I most of the time I stay in the warm/cool environment, my shoes are comfortable. I don’t think this is Athlete’s foot. Please let me know what it is called and any treatment that I can do at home?
Thank you very much,John

This does not sound like a fungal infection, but without examining your feet, it is really hard to say with any degree of certainty. It may be a vasospasm but the cause can be varied. You should be evaluated by a podiatrist.

Chilblains or Pernio is one of the diagnoses I would consider with the above description. Unfortunately, I still can not give an accurate suggestion without an examination. FYI you can do a search on Google for chilblains and get more information about it. Good luck

I suffer from the same thing and my family practice doc thinks it odd. It shows up randomly, goes away randomly and there is usually a span of months if not years between occurances. It is a red patch of slightly swollen, moderately itchy skin on the topof my left middle toe and the top of my right second toe at and above the joint below my cuticle. I have heard about something called Chilblains (chilbains?) and it sounds strikingly possible especially since I live in Fairbanks Alaska, though the last time it showed up was in the summer (70 degrees or better). Any comments on the likelihood of this being the ailment would be great. Otherwise, I will try to work up the $ to see a podiatrist or just suffer til it goes away.
