Tender/Stiff Achilles Tendon

(2 discussions)

I play tennis 2-3 times a week and for a number of years (since my mid 20’s) have suffered with tenderness and stiffness at the back of my lower ankle (achilles tendon?) the morning after playing. Sometimes the back of my ankle is so stiff I have to move it around to loosen it up so I can walk downstairs confortably. This stiffness & tenderness often lasts for a couple of days. I have tried various shoes over the years, but none of them seem to have made a difference. Please advise.

Stretch, stretch, stretch. Before and after you play tennis and in the morning. http://www.nismat.org/ check out this sight, it has the stretched that you should be doing.

GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR! I had similar symptoms to these, & thought that changing shoes would help. My achilles continued to bother me the day after sports (sometimes for 3-5 days), but not when I was playing. In Mid december one of my achilles ruptured while playing squash. The day it went I was well warmed up, stretched, and didn’t have any pain at all until it ruptured. Trust me, you want to avoid this! Apparently racquet sports are the worst for achilles tendons.
