toe cramp

I am experiencing severe toe cramps in my big toe occasionally, always at night while sleeping.
It varies between right and left toe.
It arches upwards towards my shin and is very painful.
My husband will massage the toe and the tendons that are stretched tighter than a fiddle string and, eventually it subsides.
Can you tell me what might be causing this and what I can do to alleviate the problem.
Incidentally, I take a calcium supplement.
Thank you for your help.

Your tendon and muscle most likely the Extensor Hallucis Longus is going into spasm. The reasons are unknown. I suggest you get an examination and the doctor will watch how you walk and any opther activity that might be the cause of the problem.
