Toe Numbness & Pain

(5 discussions)

My second and third toes get numb then have pain when I blade and ski.
It starts at the top of the toe then moves down until I can no longer handle it.
The problem is getting so bad that I can barely blade and am fearful that I will gain weight.
I really miss my sports.
And want to be skiing by winter.
I have seen a podiatrist to get orthotics made.
I have very flat feet.
They will be done soon.
The problem is that the condition is getting worse.
I don’t touch my feet or they will get almost numb. I can walk on them.
The condition is only in my left foot.
He gave me a shot of corisone 10 days ago to see if would help as it might be a pinched nerve causing the numbness.
I have a confession, I used to and very rarely do, pick at my feet.
Sometimes my toe nails would bleed.
Could all that have caused damage to my foot.
My feet look fine and and my toe nails have grown out, well, mostly.
The second one is slowly growing out but very slowly.
My toe nails are painted.
I have yet to tell my podiatrist that I used to pick at my feet.
I am very embrassed by this bad habit.
It was mostly caused by nerviousness similar to why people bite their finger nails.
I just don’t want to have to deal with the embarassment of telling the podiatrist that I used to have this bad habit.
Plus, I felt like if he looked at my feet, he could tell.
Anyone know of a non judegmental foot doc in Denver?
Thanks,Heather

The numbness on my middle toe is from the cuticle to my foot when I am not moving or active. When I get blading it goes downard from the tip to the ball. I thought that my initial numbness was caused because I blade ans ski on my toes. I have a calus on the ball of my foot between the second and middle toes.

From what you wrote, I believe your doctor suspects a Morton’s neuroma. While I havbe not examined your foot, I do not think your past history has much to do with the present complaint. I am curious as to why you are looking for another doctor.

Dr. Abrams, I was considering looking for a another doc because it is not easy to tell your foot doc that you used to pick your feet/toe nails. Afterall, how many patients do you have that pick at their feet? I am just really embarassed is all. However, I really do appreciate your input! Thanks,Heather

I’m not trying to play devil’s advocate here, but patients come to podiatrists all the time having done something extraordinary to their feet. I would guess at least half the ingrown toenail surgeries we do on teenagers are due to them picking at their toes. For us, it’s a day at the office. I can not see why why would it be so hard to tell the present doctor and not the next? I know if this situation occurred in my practice, I would wonder what had happened to make the patient cancel the follow up. Certainly if you are uncomfortable, you should switch.
