Toe Pain! Ouch!

(3 discussions)

Apparently, I suffered a stress fracture in my second metatarsal (sorry for the spelling!) a few weeks ago (I’m waiting for the MRI results as I write) and have been in a soft cast with a boot for about two weeks.
All this time, with increasing severity, duration and occurance, I have had pain in my big and second toes.
I understand that there is a connective nerve between the bone and the two toes and that MAY be causing the pain.
Of course, since I generally walk around with a black cloud over my head, I also developed a nasty blister on my big toe on the side of the toe nearest the second toe which has become really nastily infected.
First of all, is there any pain relief options available for the toe pain?
Secondly, is there a cure for the nerve pain or is this something I need to learn to live with?
Frankly, this has become really debilitating which, for me, is saying a lot!
I also have Crohn’s Disease and a number of related and unrelated GI problems that I am able to work through but THIS is driving me crazy!Any input would be happily appreciated!

Actually, I am in a cast boot (one of those black things with the velcro and stiff bottom, if that’s what you’re speaking of) but I’m concerned about the nerve pain in the toes. They’re also cold to the touch. Thanks.

Perhaps a cast boot that immobilizes you more is indicated. Have you discussed any of these concerns with your treating doctor?

Since you mentioned the toes feel cold, if you were my patient I would want to see you immediately. While I am not suggesting or diagnosing your particular complaint, one possibility is a uncommon nerve condition called RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy). You really need to show your doctor and see if there is something more going on
