Toe walking at 16

(3 discussions)

I am 16 years old and have been a toe walker since I started walking. My mother mentioned this to my ped. when I was 3, but he said it was nothing to be concerned with and that I would stop eventually. Obviously I haven’t…
I walk normally when wearing shoes, but walk on the front of my feet when barefoot. I have always done this, and can walk normally when I pay attention, but as soon as I stop thinking about it I go back up on my toes. This is embarrassing, and I’ve read that it can cause back and hip problems… my mother says it’s nothing but a silly habit and won’t take me to a doctor. How can I get rid of this?

I can only speculate as to what the cause of your problem is. Realistically, an examination and gait analysis would be best in order to rule out neurological or biomechanical problems. As far as it causing back and hip problems, have you had any yet? If so, then tell your mom so she might reconsider taking you to a podiatrist or orthopedist.

I do the same thing without thinking — usually when I am walking on a dirty floor or outside barefoot, and I get grossed out and don’t want my feet to touch the ground, I guess. As long as you are aware of the issue and aren’t currently experiencing any back or hip problems I don’t think it is harmful.

I wish I knew, also. I am 14 am am still walking on my toes. I think about it often, and am trying to stop, but it’s difficult. It’s just too embaressing… I am experiencing back pains, but I am quite tall. The only good thing about this is that I have nice, big, calve muscles.
