Torn Bicep Tendon

I am 38 years old and Saturday I reached out to tap a volleyball in the air and did something to my arm. The emergency room said I might have torn my bicep tendon. How is this possible when I was not doing anything strenuous and now what are my options.

: I am 52 years old and have ruptured my left bicep tendon. Initially the Dr. said I still had some conective tissue on the tendon (less then 30%) and there was a chance that it would heal and scare enough to prevent surgery. Last week I was moving some stuff in the house and reinjured it. Now the tendon is bulging slightly above the elbow, and the muscle is slack. The Dr. says if he has to cut to reattach the tedon, I will probably lose the ability to straighten the arm fully. Is there any alternatives?
