Torn ligament?

(4 discussions)

I had a bad accident on a moped last year and have damaged my knee.
I had the accident 18th September and am still in a lot of pain.
It gets better for a while but when it gets bad, I can’t walk.
The next pain killer for me is Morphine, thats how bad it is.
The doctor I saw when I first went into hospital thought I had torn the ligament on the inside of my knee.
The doctor I saw the day after just sent me round to physio.
Thats made me worse and i’m really having to push for something to be done.
My knee hasn’t been scanned or anything.
Should I push for the scan and what else can be done?
Please someone e.mail me if you have any advice, the pain is getting too bad to take and it’s ruining my social life.
Thanks

Emma, Sounds like this is a ligament issue. After the accident, did you go to the ER? Did they make your wear a knee mobilizer (brace) and then did you see an orthopedic surgeon, who made you take an MRI which showed the torn ligament(s) and then treatment accordingly? I ask these questions because I just had a very nasty skiing accident on February 2nd this year. That evening I went to an ER, where they put me in an immobilizer knee brace, and ordered me to use crutches. They advised me to see an orthopedic surgeon. After a few days I went to him and he examined my knee and told me that I have torn my MCL (inside ligament – what you may have damaged as well) and ACL ligaments. It’s almost two months now and I’m still wearing a brace, but my leg’s getting better, since I don’t use crutches anymore even though I use the brace. The treatment is going well so far, even though I’ll need surgery to fix my torn ACL (it never heals on its own). Around July I expect to walk on my own, without a brace, according to the physical therapist. Anyways, I wanted to share my experience regarding knee injury, and I want to advise you to see a good orthopedic surgeon IMMEDIATELY! Will your insurance cover all this, i.e., are you stuck in a nasty HMO situation or no insurance at all? This is very important that you solve this problem right now, via the right professional, since THIS PROBLEM WILL NOT GO AWAY AND WILL ONLY GET WORSE AS TIME/YEARS PASS! It’s your knee after all. The doctor that you saw should not have just sent you away to physical therapy without proper treatment/healing. Sounds like you are getting ripped in this process. You HAVE TO see a specialist (orthopedic surgeon) and have MRI if he/she orders such. If your insurance/HMO won’t help you, then use your savings/credit cards for treatment (and then later drag the insurance/HMO to court), or else you will be in a lot of pain which will never go away! I really feel for you. Please feel free to email me at: [email protected] if you feel like discussing this further. These types of injuries are expensive to treat all right, but it’s still better than the alternative. Please let me know if I can be of further help/consolation and please, please see an orthopedic surgeon. Take care. – Rupa

I went to the hospital after I injured my ankle playing soccer and found out that I tore a ligament and he said to stay off it and then told me to leave and that was all and I think he should have given me crutches should I buy some my self or not?

Hi Rupa,I’m not a specialist or anything, but have had the same problems as you. What you can do is ask for it to be X-rayed. that should tell you whether you have any fractures on the bones in your leg. However, if there are any ligament or meniscus damage, you wont be able to see it on the X-ray. For ligament and meniscus damage, you need to get a MRI scan on it. it’s more expensive than the x-ray.preferably, see a sepcialist first before you do anything. although they can’t be 100% sure, it’s good to get a second opinion before getting any surgery done.

you should get a MRI scanning or an ultra-sound scanning ASAP. that should tell you what’s going on inside your knee.
