torn off Toenail

(2 discussions)

My big toenail tore off in a freak accident with my son’s shoe.
The nail was perpendicular to my toe, my husband pressed the nail down and taped it up.
A day later I took the bandaid off and saw the grotesque cut in my skin where the bottom of the nail had broken through.
I’ve been soaking in Epsom salts, then using hydrogen peroxide and neosporin.
I won’t be able to see a doctor until next week because of the holiday and the yellow, broken skin is freaking me out.
Any suggestions>Thanks,Mari

Keeping it covered and protected is your best bet. As far as the yellow broken skin goes, when a wound is kept covered, the skin absorbs moisture. This also happens when one stays in water for a long time as well. It is not pathological. Please continue to keep it covered withthe Neosporin until you see a doctor. Letting it air dry will not be helpful at all.Hope this helps and good luck. Your nail will grow back, just that it will take many months to complete. It will quit hurting before long.

Thanks for your reply. Believe it or not, the nail has pinked up and seems to be mostly reattached. Is that possible? I will continue to soak and bandage.
