Torn Quadricep operation recovery

(4 discussions)

I tore my right quadricep pretty badly and am going to have it repaired this week. Does anyone know how long it takes to heal so that I may run again?

I’d be curious to know where your tear is and what the doctor’s prognosis is. Our PT told us that the higher up the leg (towards the hip) the tear occurs, the longer the rehab since it is easiern (or maybe quicker) to rehab the quad lower to the knee. My daughter did not require surgery but had a significant tear close to the top of her leg. It’s been almost 10 weeks post-injury, her leg has just (in the last week) started to show real signs of strengthening back to it’s previous status, but there is still intense pain with even minimal jogging. She does PT 3xweek plus home stretching/strengthening 3xday, some leg weights (after the 1st 4 weeks) and non-resistance exercising (biking and swimming)every day. My suggestion is to not push the running – it seems that every time my daughter has done that she has only regressed in her recovery. Good luck.

My husband fell onto a step and tore his rt. quad muscle(actually shredded it) and had surgery 2 wks ago this friday. He is not allowed any weight on it oe bending for at least another 3 wks. Who knows what the dr. will tell us at that point. I hope that he lets him start walking on it then, but will he still need the brace. Have you found out anything more on recovery? He tore it at the knee and they had to drill holes in his knee to repair it.

I shredded my left quad in March. Tore 3/4 off the bone. Had surgery on April 1. They had to drill holes to reattach it to the knee. Dr. ordered 8 weeks of complete immobility. It’s been 3 months since the surgery and I’m having complications. The quad muscle won’t “fire” and they are looking for nerve damage trying to figure out whats wrong. My knee has not been bent in 3 months and feels like I have concrete in my knee joints. They say I will have to be put under to have it manually manipulated to break up scar tissue. Sure hope you don’t go through what I have gone through. Let me know. Good luck.

I tore my quadricep tendon back in March and had surgery in April. They had to re-attach the quad to the tenodn so know I have a 12 inch scar from the middle of my thigh to my knee cap… I was able to start rehab in May but mainly focusing on flexibility. I began strength exercises (leg press, squats, leg curls, etc.) in August but it has been tough. I have no pain but I have swelling everyday. I also started Spin (cycling)classes in October and that has helped with the strength but I’m still only at 30% recovery. I have a hard time walking up the stairs and hills. I also have to be careful and not stumble or trip because I can not catch myself with my left leg… I have read that recovery can be anywhere from 12 – 18 months. Like you, I was hoping that I can speak to someone about this to get another perspective…
