Torn Tendon in Finger

I tore a tendon in my pinkey.
My doctor is having me splint the finger in a totally extended position for 6 weeks.
She feels the tendon will grow across and repair itself.
The other option is to put a pin into the finger to keep it straight.How successful is the splinting process.
I am a 33 y.o. male non-smoker in good health who plays competitive sports on a regular basis.

I tore tendon in ring finger 3 months ago. I wore a splint (cast) at the distal end of finger for 8weeks. Tip of finger is still bending in. I still have the original pain(slight) at DIP joint, especially when I try to make a fist. But now the PIP joint is swollen (can’t get ring on finger). After 3 month the finger is no better (maybe even worse). Any suggestions out there? Help!
