treatment for broken first metatarsal

(4 discussions)

Hi,
Dr. Abrams.
I think I may have fractured my first metatarsal near the proximal phalange.
This occured by, of all things, dropping a frozen chicken breast edge-wise onto the top of my bare foot.
It’s been five-weeks and still painful when pressed and adducted (range of motion slightly limited).
Is there a standard treatment?
Is this something that needs casting or will it heal by not bearing weight?
I didn’t see a Doctor due to me thinking it was probably just bruised.
Now I’m second guessing.
Thank you, very much, for your time.–Ian

Since I can’t see your foot, I can only assume that ther was a significant injury since you still have pain and swelling. Without an X ray and exam, I can’t be sure what to tell you. When in doubt, immobilize the injury. You really should get an examination and X ray.

: I was out hiking on some rough terrain, and kind of slipped. The next morning, the outside edge of my foot (from the little toe almost to the ankle) was sore whenever I put my weight down on it. Since I was out camping, I had to hike back in a couple of miles loaded down with a pretty heavy pack, and by the end, I was limping pretty heavily and leaning pretty hard on a walking stick. I’m back in civilization now (obviously), and that same area of my foot hurts like crazy when I walk on it. It’s also a little swollen. I have a pretty full range of motion; the only real pain comes when I put weight on it. Does that sound like a sprain? : This is a really cool site, by the way. Thanks a lot.

Dear Dr. Abrams,Last night I did a stupid thing – a Coca Cola machine took my dollar but was not functioning. I got angry and kicked the machine. I noticed an almost numb pain but after a second or so I was on my feet again with only slight pain. It has been about four hours now and that slight pain has turned into difficulty walking on the foot. I can flex it up and down just fine but the when I squeeze the area around my arch it hurts, almost to the ankle. Iremember someone talling me once if you break a bone you usually can tell because it’s too painful to move. Is it possible I just sprained the ligament?Sincerely,Chris
