Weak quad…help!!

(2 discussions)

From about a month of overuse (upping running mileage, walking onhills, using stairs, cycling) my left quad has become weak to thepoint that if I walk for about 5 minutes I can feel it getting weakand it along with my knee will just tighten up and get stiff making itbothersome to walk. I don’t have any pain however. I stopped runningabout 2 weeks ago but still walk, bike, and use stairs out ofnecessity. I also started doing some very mild quad strengthening (leglifts mainly) but still am having weakness problems. What do I need todo about this? Is it ok to run a little bit or at least do theelliptical? I want it to get better but I can’t stand not being ableto be active. Thanks so much!!

I would have that looked at medically. That could possibly be more of a back problem than an actual quad problem. While it is not impossible quads do not usually weaken like that. I would have that evaluated by your physician to rule out any of the more significant possibilities. If nothing else is wrong, then some general strengthening with lunges, squats, and leg lifts would be a good start. Activity modificcation would also be recommended.

I would also suggest that you be seen by a sports medicine or orthopedic surgeon for this problem. We can assume that its one thing when you really need to rule out other possibilities.
