Weird foot pain

My husband woke up last night with a very strange, but painful foot problem. The pain is a sharp pain located on the top of the foot in between the outer ankle and bottom of the foot, right about where the border of your tennis shoe hits. He is unable to walk without a sharp pain shooting up his side from his foot to his arm. I looked all over the Intenet for similar symptoms, but most of them are for the ankles, tendons, balls of the feet, and toes. There is nothing about this location of the foot anywhere. He did not drop anything on it or twist it in any way. This pain was out of the blue and he was unable to sleep because of it. Can you think of anything that might cause this?

It would be best for him to see a podiatrist and have this checked out.
