what should i do if i have broken my toe

I think I may have broken my middle toe, I stubbed it against something I didn’t see on the floor and I am struggling with the pain of it (or should I say throb).
I am 34 years old and have never broken anything before so don”t know if I have or not.
Is it true that if a toe is broken nothing can be done for it anyway?Maybe just strapped to the toe next to it to keep it straight.
I assume if I am still having pain in next few days I should go to docs.
I have taken some pain killers so will see what happens!

A broken toe hurts plenty and I fail to understand how people can repeat the often heard “there’s nothing you can do for a broken toe.” There are many things depending on the fracture, the patient, their activities etc. An X-ray would be necessary to see the fracture. If it is in good alignment, then your doctor should show you how to splint it. Do not splint the big toe to the others. The 2nd,3rd,4th and 5th toes can be splinted to each other. I usually use a foam pad between each toe to cushion and support before using tape. A tape that stretches allows for swelling and is easier to use than simple adhesive tape. Wear whatever shoe or sandal you are comfortable in. Ice compression rest and elevation are the gold standards of treatment. It will take up to 6 weeks to heal.See your doctor and good luck.
