20th week-fifth metatarsal Jones Fracture-Surgery on Mon!

(3 discussions)

I broke my foot on June 14th and am having surgery on Mon., Oct. 20th to remove a bone fragment from my hip to place in my fifth metatarsal “jones fracture” with a screw. I went through 6 and 1/2 weeks of a cast with four more with a removable boot that I could only remove when I was at home. At work, on my feet I had to wear the boot and then before 8 pm I had to wear the bone stimulator in order to have it off before 6 am so I could go to work the next day. Now, after four solid months I need to do a bone graft from my hip and attach by a screw to achieve healing by approximately 5 1/2 to 6 weeks of non-weight bearing “crutch” walking. Don’t get me wrong, it’s just that I am an active woman who likes to climb and fish and swim and run and jump like any other American woman. I am not ready to be “old” LOL. I don’t want to feel old. The thing is, this summer I have been totally incapacitated, so to speak. My husband and I have not had the boat out once, not on one hike, just one picnic and in the cast I thought I was dying! LOL….but not really funny. This past Saturday, after the second double shift I was asked to pull, I finally had to cry “uncle” and quit my job of deli manager that I really enjoyed so much. I loved my job and was very good at it and had to give it up because my body part that was injured said “NO!!!!” I wore a removable boot which my doctor said was ok, but still the swelling was astronomical. I finally had to decide what was it that I loved to do or what was it that was best for my well-being? Every day after work I had a knot or swelling on the top of my foot the size of at least an egg…like a huge oblong mosquito bite only the biggest you ever saw. Please tell me…. What is my prognosis? I am or have been active and want to continue to be. My surgery is just two days away. I will update you on my progress but would like some feedback in the interim. Sorry if this sounds like a “sort of Panic” but it is!!! Answer back soon!!!!!!!!
Thanks,Donna

First of all, if you are in a panic mode, you need to discuss this with your doctor. I always want my patients to be comfortable with what is going to happen afterwards. Please do yourself a favor and talk to your doctor. That is where your answers should come from.

Ten days after surgery….Well the surgery is over. It has been very painful but the doctor said that is because he had to excise a lot of scar tissue before he could do the rest. He said “a lot of work went into a small area”. At day 10 the pain has let up a lot and I am able to get by with only ibuprofen during the day and usually only have to take the more powerful pain relievers at night and when I awake in the middle of the night. Everything seems really optimistic right now about a good recovery. My question to you and to my doctor, besides the risks of refracture in the future, and the possible need to remove the screw, is there any other possible effects of this down the road? Does this increase risks for arthritis, gout, or any other problems? Just wondering. Thanks in advance for any infoDonna
