Get the book Pain Erasure by Bonnie Prudden
http://www.bonnieprudden.com
She writes for the laymen, has pictures, and adds exercises for strenghtening afterwards.
Basically, a tp is an irritable area that causes pain, dysfunction, and refers pain to various other parts.
With the aid of the book you can hunt and peck for yourself, but go find a good massage therapist.

Can you tell me more about trigger points in the abdomen. I understand the link between strong muscles and less pain and maybe my stomach makes my back worse. How do I locate these trigger points and what do I do about them

Well I am not sure what is going on here. The pains might be unrelated, but in school we were taught that weak abdominal muscles put straine on the lower back. So if someone came to me saying that the lower back hurt I would give them some abdominal exercises to do. So that they would be strong enough to keep the pelvis from tilting forward. I was also taught that trigger points in the abdomin can refer pain to the back.
