AC separation of right shoulder

(4 discussions)

Hi… I am a 26 year old active male who has been diagnosed with a 2nd degree AC separation of my right shoulder (I’m left handed). I was in for physical therapy for about 3 months and the symptoms have improved but are still present, some have suggested surgery and others have said if I can avoid it, that would be my best bet. I play a lot of basketball and tennis and I also workout a fair amount. I was wondering if there was a brace or support you would think would help my shoulder feel more “stable” and strong, while at the same time not limiting my movement in these activities? Thanks for your time.Dave

An AC joint separation can take months to heal. I suggest you avoid these activities…especially overhead with forceful movements such as tennis, till you no longer feel instability. If you feel grinding or general “instability” the joint is not healed yet and if you keep “working through” this feeling you’re not giving it a chance to heal and scar tissue to form. Be patient, continue doing the exercises your PT gave you and follow the guidelines for activity by your doc or PT. Surgery is not really indicated for a grade II joint separation… Do some research on the web and you’ll find some good info.

Hi… this is basically for Mya the PT but also for anyone who could help me. I’m a 34 year old male who has recently had a 3rd degree AC separation of my left shoulder. I was wondering if anybody has any websites they have found helpful in giving excercises and stretches to do to help, and if anyone could tell me if the bump on my shoulder is ever going to go away and if it will ever be possible to get full function out of my shoulder? Thanks
