I am having surgery to remove my accessory navicular and I was wondering what the procedure was like and how long the rehab stage will last?

Kris….would you consider your surgery a success? Or are you not sure yet? I did the same thing …injured my ankle twiceand now my instep is painful everyday due to the dislocation of the accessory navicular. Orthodics have helped but aren’t very practical. I am considering the surgery…but just don’t know ????

I had accessory navicular surgery done at the age of 16 on my right foot. I’m 24 now. I was also a dancer and cheerleader, which aggrevated the condition. I had a modified Kidner procedure done on my right foot, which involves cutting through the tendon to remove the bone. My surery was not successful. I still have pain in the right foot and I’m reliant on custom orthodics in my tennis shoes. My left foot has gotten progressively worse since I had the right one done and I’m considering another surgery, but a different procedure that involves removing the carilige that connects the accessory navicular to the main bone. A pin is then inserted to fuse the bones together. If you do have surgery, insist on physical therapy to bring back mobility and strenght to the tendon. Not having any PT following my first surgery is a regret of mine.

I had accessory navicular surgery with a Kidner Proceedure on September 30th, 2014.I am currenty recovery but have noticed a marked visible diffrence in my foot. my accessory navicular stuck out of my foot so now one foot looks slightly different. My doctor stated that the surgery was a success. Before now I haven’t even been able to walk or sand longer then 4 hours without extreme pain. Kris, following your first surgery were you well enought to stand and walk for say an eight hour work day?Kate

Hey! I think my surgery was a success but my doctor did not give me any physical therapy and my foot is kind of stiff. It’s driving me nuts because I want to dance, but I can walk fine and wearing shoes is not that much of a problem. If you get it done, just make sure that your doctor will give you physical therapy asap!!!! Thats very important. if you can live with the bone then I say don’t do the surgery, but if it is truly bothering you to the point where you can’t function as a human being, then get it done. Also, try to get it done so that they shave the bone down instead of having to open tendons to pull it out. Just ask your doctor about what kind of procedures there are.

I have pain and swelling in the navicular joints. I have been wearing a fixed brace for 3 months. The physician plans surgery, to fuse the bones, have you heard of this and what is the sucess rate

hello! I just had this surgery done in July because I sprained my ankle and my navicular on my right foot got worse. I’m a dancer, so in order to continue my dancing, the doctor said that it would help to get it removed. And so I did, it was a really simple procedure but I was in a lot of pain for two weeks after the surgery. I had to walk with crutches for a while and wear a post op shoe. As of right now I am still healing but hopefully I feel comfortable enough to get back into dancing soon.

It is April 26, 2016 & I had my accessory navicular on my right foot removed May 27, 2015 & have had nothing but pain since then. I had a bone sticking out of the inside of my foot that looked like the ankle bone on the outside of the foot. I had a great Dr. who did the surgery & all went well. I now have strange shooting pains that go from my foot to my lower leg (cut nerves that are still healing) & pain on the inside of the foot. If I could do it again, I would NOT. The pain before was nothing compared to what I am dealing with now. I am only 29 so I guess I get to live with this the rest of my life. PLEASE consider this BEFORE you have this surgery done.

It’s now been two weeks since my surgery. My foot is feeling about the way it did with a dull tendon ache the stiffness is weird. I plan to do Physical therapy as soon as the doctor ok’s me to bear full weight. I’ve started with some passive stretching already. I am about to go nuts off my feet, but I wasn’t that active due to the bones before. I sure hope it works. I used to be very athletic but was always held back by the pain. I have an 18 month old daughter and I do not want to be held back by my feet anymore!

MY DAUGHTER ALSO HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH THIS. SHE HAS WORN THE SHOE INSERT FOR 4 MONTHS NOW AND IT IS STILL VERY PAINFUL. SHE IS ALMOST 11 AND A VERY ACTIVE SOCCER PLAYER AND CHEERLEADER. SHE COMPLAINS EVERY DAY OF THE PAIN. SHE KICKED ONE OF THE ACCESSORY NAVICULARS THE OTHER DAY PLAYING IN A SOCCER TOURNAMENT AND HAD TO ICE IT DOWN. SHE WAS IN TEARS. I DON’T THINK OUR DOCTOR WANTS TO DO SURGERY AT HER AGE, BUT SHE IS IN PAIN. DID YOUR DAUGHTER HAVE THE SURGERY AND HOW DID IT GO?

I was diagnosed with this when I was only 10 years old. At that age, the pain was very mild and now, I am 16 years old and the pain is horrible! I am no longer able to walk on it without it hurting!! I do alot of dance, so its been interferring with that as well. I am scheduled to get my surgery very soon and quite nervous, but just glad to know that I will soon not have to deal with the severe pain.

I was wondering if you have had your surgery and how it went. My daughter has been suffering with foot pain for several months and was recently diagnosed with having this same condition. The doctor would like her to start with orthotics and if that does not work he would suggest surgery. I am trying to research the condition in case we need to make that decision. Please respond?

i am having surgery in a few weeks, anyone that has had it done, is it worth it? the constant pain I’m in now is stopping me from doing daily functions, I have no mobility in the foot and the dr tells me I don’t have much choice, I’ve had orthotics for about 15 yrs as well as a richie brace(which has helped but the problem has gotten much worse). Any advice?

It takes only 15 minuets even though I am 12 I am a usag gymnast and I have Had it done you do end up with a 1 inch scar but it isn’t bad you don’t need to go to rehab or anything

I had my accessory navicular bone removed in August. Unfortunately my tendon was attached to my bone, which caused the problem of having to re-attach my tendon to a different bone. I was in a soft cast for 2 weeks, a hard cast for 4 weeks, and a boot for 6 weeks. I have had 2 shoulder surgeries, 3 hip surgeries, and a knee surgery and this was by far the most painful. I had a wonderful doctor and he did a great job. I was miserable for a while but I am already so glad I had this surgery and I am able to walk almost pain-free now. I have heard horror stories about this surgery and I think the biggest key is having a doctor who knows exactly what he/she is talking about and you take the recovery slow!!

Was that a soft case for 2 weeks, THEN a hard cast for 4 weeks, THEN a boot for 6 weeks? What type of job do you do. I’m in law enforcement so I think my recovery might be longer because I have to be able to run

We are considering this procedure for our 12 year old daughter. She has had four episodes in the last year that have shut her down from all activities until she was able to rehab her foot. We live in Pennsylvania. We would be interested in any physician referals or rehab expectations anyone might have.

I am 15 yrs old and have my surgery scheduled for December 1. I am really scared. I am planning to take a week out of school after the surgery. Is the pain unbearable after the surgery? If you could, please walk me through everything that happened with you after the surgery. Thank you.
