Achilles – I want to walk!

(4 discussions)

I’ve been struggling with what we believe is chronic achilles tendinitis. It was first injured over 6 years ago and has limited my activities from time to time over the years, but at the beginning of January after a short run it began to cause me a lot of pain, so much so that I have had great difficulty walking or standing on my feet for more than a few minutes.

During these last 5 weeks I have tried to stay off it, to ice it regularly and am doing gentle stretches, yet the pain persists. I had a doctor look at it and he didn’t think there was a rupture and so encouraged me to continue what I am doing. That was a couple of weeks ago. Does anyone have a clue as to how long it may take for me to get over the pain and pack on my feet???

I had a Grade 2 tear of my acchilles in 1997 – it was treated nonoperatively and included 8 weeks in a cast and 2-3 weeks in a ROM. You should seek out physical therapy through your doctor to strengthen the tendon/ligaments in your leg, as they have atrophied considerably. As soon as your plaster cast comes off you should be starting a regiment of exercises to strengthen not only the acchilles/calf, but also the injured leg. Best of luck

Hi, I have totally ruptured my achilles tendon 7 wks ago. I had the plaster taken off this wk and now have a ROM boot. I have not yet found either the hospital or my own doctor “that” helpful and I feel in the dark and very frustrated as to what happens now. When I went to get the plaster off I thought great I can get a walking stick and get on the mend however, the hospital said I should stay on my crutches and, apart from 2 weekly visitis to get the angle of the boot adjusted, come back to see the specialist in 6 weeks. Wow I thought this is going to be a lot longer than I thought! Anyone else had the same injury, are you further on the mend than me or can anyone give me any advice?

u can check for a rupture using the thomsom test.
Lie on your front get a friend to squezze ur calf if there is a tear your foot will not move if it is not a tear then ur foot moves (is this how ur doc checked?)
    is it tendonitis or paratendonitis?
u can check this easily by pressing the tendon (friend) and u move your foot plantar flexion and dorsi flexion (up and down) if the pain gets worse at points then it is tendonitis if it remains constant the it is paratendonitis (the sheath)
    hope this helps.

If you truly are staying off and resting it, then the pain should have alleviated by now. How are you strecthing? Are you waiting until the pain really dies down before you start stretching? Achilles is one of those injuries that needs complete avoidance of stretching in the beginning. How are your shoes? Do they need to be replaced? Where are you running? Have you tried running on softer surfaces? Are you strecthing your calves, too? Have you tried a massage therapist? Sounds like something is getting locked up above the achilles and causing the tightening there. They could probably work some things out for you. Good luck!
