Achilles tendon injury

My husband had a 4×8 1/2 inch thick piece of sheet metal fall from the top of a coal washer hitting him on the shoulder and the heel. He has had 3 surgeries on this shoulder and 1 on his heel. He was taking a step away, his heel was facing up.
The next morning his whole ankle and foot was a dark black bruise.
The surgeon took off what he called a bone spur that grew from the injury and scraped damage off from the achilles tendon.
The problem is he cannot run and he has trouble walkin up steps.
Sometimes he cannot even walk for a while when he gets up.
Is there any thing that can help him? He is never without pain.
The doctor says it is now tendonitits, but I disagree because of the force with which the steel hit and the continued severe pain.
He never had any trouble or pain in his feet before the injury.

The surgery on the back of the heel can sometimes bother patients for up to a year. You did not indicate how long this has been.
