ACL (its still hurting)

(3 discussions)

I braved it and went for my first run since having a total ACL recon in Sept 2004. I am hoping to start light training (football) shortly. However, although my knee is stable and the graft has taken well i get terrible burning pains either side of the knee cap. I recently saw a surgeon (who didnt perform the original op) who reckons he will remove one of the screws??? Will this effect the strength of the graft? Would appriciate any advice.

Thanks

(a very frustrated 22yr girl with a fat knee)

Thanks for the advice. Had an x-ray which shows that the graft is well held, so fingers crossed.

it depends on how well the graft has healed and how much scar tissue is in place. most times the screws can be taken out because there is enough scar tissue to hold the graft, but this is after there has been plenty of time for the scar tissue to develop. i’m not sure how long it takes for enough scar tissue to build up or anything. did the surgeon do any x-rays or an mri or anything. these types of tests would tell him how much scar tissue is in place and also give him a better idea of how stable your knee will be without the screw. hope this helps! and good luck!
