ACL RUPTURE

(4 discussions)

I am a female soccer player and 2 weeks ago I had an anthroscopy for my knee. They found out that I have damaged 95% of my ACL. They simple trimmed it and have sent me for 3 months intensive physio. However I still cannot fully straighten my leg and continually my leg buckles under me about 3 times a day. I have heard about the reconstruction thing that they can do and was wondering if anybody out there could advise me what to do. I really want to get back playing football at a bhigh level again as soon as possible and with my knee being the way it is I cannot see that happeneing. I was wondering if perhaps I should ask to be referred back to the consultants now and ask about the possiblity of getting it reconstructed or if I should hold of for the 3 months and hope that the muscles around it will strengthen enough to be able to support me playing again without it continually giving me problems. I have no other damage in my knee apart from this. My hamstrings, quads and calfs are beginning to weaken already and like I said I cannot fully straighten my leg and it can getr very painful after I have done even a little walking.
Has anybody else experienced this and should I ask the physio about a referral now or wait till they tell me. I will probably be put on a waiting list anyway. I live in Scotland so does anyone know how long it would be I would be on the waiting list (roughly) before I would get it done and how long would the rehabilitation take if I did go ahead with it.

Please reply if you can help as I am desperate

Cheers

Get a referral back to your OS asap! In non-athletes they can sometimes live without an ACL. But in high level athletes this is not possible. There are some rehab protocals that can enhance the outcome, but you are still risking your long term knee health by not reconstructing. You will not be able to have surgery immediately since you do need to have full extension for surgery. For now really work on hamstring strength/control.
