Aggressive pt after Rotar Cuff surgery!

(3 discussions)

Hi, I have had my pt 5 days after surgery and it has been only a passive therapy orderded by my dr. I had a tear, a spur, the base of my collar bone was shaved and I had repairs in my bicep. After 8 weeks of surgery which the period I’m in right now, my dr gave me script for aggressive therapy which I started doing 2 days ago. Man, that was torture and I was in tears. it was so painful. Does that get better as you go through it or what? Any advice how to deal with it? I take my pain med an hour before I go for pt but I don’t feel much relief. I dread going now. I’m a tennis player and I just got to get full range of my movements which I don’t have much of it right now. My surgeon says if I’m still stiff when he sees me next in 4 month, he’ll have to do another surgery. I was in shock and didn’t discuss anything about that possibility. Does any one knows what that would be? is it like to manipulate the shoulder to get full movements? or what? and will that work? is it painful? I’m trying to think positive and that my therapy will go well and I wont have to go through any more agony.. Please help.. Thanks

I guess that’s why they sometimes call us physical terrorists. Ask your PT if they can do some heat or ultrasound then some deap tissue massage to break up the scar tissue…are you getting joint mobs? You are in a very crucial stage to get your range back..if you don’t you will get manipulated. They do it under anesthesia to break up the scar tissue. Good luck.

HI-THANK YOU FOR ANY DETAILED ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE ME: MY HUSBAND IS 88 AND HAS SUFFERED ROTOR CUFF DAMAGE (TEAR) HE IS IN PAIN FOR THE LEAST TURN – THEY ARE GIVING HIM INJECTIONS THAT WE KNOW WILL NOT WORK. HE WAS TOLD TO KEEP MOVING HIS ARM BUT SOMETIMES ANY TYPE OF MOVEMENT HURTS HIM INTENSELY. HE HAS HAD HEART SURGERY (QUAD. BY-PASS) HE SAID HE HAS HEARD AWFUL TALES ABOUT HAVING ROTOR CUFF SURGERY – THAT IT IS A LONG AND PAINFUL RECOVERY AND IS AFRAID THAT HIS HEART COULDN’T TAKE IT. AS OF NOW, I FEEL IT IS AFFECTING HIS HEART FROM THE PAIN OF IT. CAN ORTHOSCOPIC SURGERY HELP RATHER THAN HEAVY SURGERY??? AGAIN, THANK YOU. KATHLEEN

I am 2 weeks out of surgery for torn rotator cuff. I have had a lot of pain and still the pain is bad. I am to keep the shoulder mobilized for another 2 weeks before Physical therapy begins. I am worried that my arm will be so stiff and that PT will be very painful. This is really an ordeal and I would tell anyone to do whatever they could before having this surgery.
