Ankle injury–going on 15 months now….

(3 discussions)

Hi, in February of 2001, I hurt my right ankle by landing sideways from a jump. The doctor said that it was just badly sprained, and that I should just stay on crutches for about 2 weeks. I hurt it on the last night of softball tryouts, so I didn’t listen. I kept playing last season, and I got it taped and iced at the school trainer everyday. Last June, after softball ended, I went to the orthopedic surgeon, because it hadn’t gotten any better. They did an MRI, and found that I had bruised the bone, but other than that, I was fine. I took last fall and winter off, and when it still wasn’t better in January, (right before softball was about to start again) I went back to the orthopedic surgeon. He said that there was nothing he could do, and he sent me back to physical therapy. I went 3 times a week for 2 hours for about 2 months. The therapist said that there were too many problems (scar tissue, cartilage damage, bone bruise, tendinitis, and bursitis), and everytime she tried to repair one, another would worsen. We tried pretty much everything, including deep massage, ice, heat, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation. The therapist told me to go back to the doctor. My mom doesn’t think anything is wrong, because the doctor has said that there is nothing he can do. I can’t catch anymore, and I’ve had to stop running as well, because even with tape and/or a brace, it just hurt too much. The pain varies a lot on what I’m doing. When I pull my foot towards me, there are sharp pains on the top inside of my ankle. When I run, it hurts around the outside bone, and when I point my toes, there are shooting pains through the back of my ankle. I also stopped snowboarding, as turning onto my toe side created very sharp pains. I honestly don’t know what to do, and not participating is really starting to bother me. Any advice would be extremely helpful. Thank you so much. Sorry for the long message.

Hey–sorry about dragging my post back from the dead, but I’m still on the hunt for a diagnosis. I have seen relavtively a lot of literature on osteochondritis dessicans, and it sounds about right for me. Does anyone know if this could be a possibility for me and my stupid ankle?

I would recommend that you see a specialist – i mean a SPECIALIST – someone who really knows their stuff and aren’t just a bush league doctor jerking you around. It my experience that doctors will tell you anything just to make a diagnosis – are you in an HMO? You really need to see someone who will take accountablity – unfortunately finding a good orthopedist isn’t the easiest.

I had ankle problems for the last year and was mis-diagnosed (see my post on FHL tendonitis) so I can totally relate. You may have to try a cast!

    good luck
