Ankle popping and snapping

(2 discussions)

This has been going on for a good 10 years and I am 25 years old. Every time I roll either ankle it cracks about 6 times. It had never bothered me until recently. Now, when I wake up in the morning, if I DON’T crack my ankles it feels stiff and uncomfortable. When I DO crack them, it still feels stiff and uncomfortable. It is now also beginning to hurt on the outside of each leg about 6-8 inches above each ankle. I am headed to my doctor next week, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas here. My main concern is that this is causing damage to my ankles and they will get weaker as I get older.

If you do a search on Google for popping ankles there will be several sites that discuss this rather common phenomenon. The general consensus is that if there is no pain then it is probably ok. There is no scientific evidence that the popping leads to arthritis.

I have recently been focused on understanding all of the things that I feel may be future health problems to me. I am just recently 22 years old, and about two years ago, I noticed that my left ankle, (and not my right), pops everytime I decend a staircase. For each step I take downward, there is a loud snap sound. It doesn’t hurt one bit, but I thought it would stop and it has not. Am I in for a case of RA, or is there no reason to worry?
