Arthritic big toe!!

(3 discussions)

I have early onset arthritis in my big toe joints. The pain flares up every so often but is not constant enough at the moment to warrent surgery according to my consultant. However, because the joint has limited movement it is having a knock on effect up my leg into my hip, and I have been told to stop running outside. What I want to know is does the surgery for it give a good range of movement back and therefore solve the whole leg problem? I am under 40 and hopefully have a lot of running years ahead of me!

I have arthritis in my right big toe. It started as tendonitis about 10 years ago. One reason it occurred is because my right foot is bigger, and I was always fitting shoes to my left foot (a vain female, I know.)
Anyway, I now fit my shoes to the big foot and, for the past year I have suffered from a wide range of problems – piriformis syndrome, sacroileac joint dysfunction, hamstring tendonitis, and now achilles tendonitis in the small foot.
On my recent visit to a podiatrist I learned that my arthritic right foot has dropped its arch and is pronating badly. That caused all the asymmetry which led to the problems with my hip. And wearing a too-big shoe on my left foot caused the achilles tendonitis.
    I am a trainwreck.
The good news (I hope) is that now with some orthotics I can straighten up that right leg and get my hips back in alignment. And with some padding in the left shoe, the achilles will be happier.
And all this because of an arthritic big toe…….

My podiatrist and a foot and ankle consultant diagnosed my arthritis. Gait, history, manipulation and x-ray to confirm it. The pain is on the top of the foot where the toe starts and if you press on the joint it can be very sore. It is where the tendons run over the joint and get inflamed on the bony growths – ugh! Pain worse in cold sports halls! It seems to be staying the same so won’t be bothering with surgery, but if your pain is no better, you should see someone for a diagnosis.

How’d you know it was arthritis…occasionally my big toe hurts on my left side. I did gymnastics and cheerleading most of my life, but picked up running and have kept with that since high school. I also have some funky soreness on the ball of my foot inside on the last 3 toes of that side…just curious how you knew…
