Hello Tim, I’m sorry that I don’t have any further info on your question about the Bone Drilling procedure, except that my doctor has mentioned it as an option in the future. I also have AVN of part of my right Talus. I was in a motocross accident in Sept. 2011,little over a year ago. I had surgery the day of the incident, an open reduction with internal fixation (two screws through the back of my Talus). The doctors classified it as a Talar Neck Fracture of Hawkin’s type 3. Since, as you probably already know, there is a high risk of AVN in fractures of this type, the doctors instructed me to remain non WB. At about 6-8 months I started wearing a brace, similar to the one in the ad on the forum that you posted, mine is a lace up brace attatched to a shoe. The brace keeps me virtually non-WB but allows for movement of my ankle to prevent atrophy. The brace is quite uncomfortable on my shin so I often resort to the crutches at home. I visit my doctor every 3 months to review X-rays, and actually just had an appt. with him earlier today. Although there are no major signs of improvement, I am told that I am very lucky that no parts of the bone have collapsed. I’m sure that you are very well aware how limited the options are for recovery and surgerys, and that it is difficult to find information on treatments. The only active thing I have been told to do is to “wait” (not very active), and to have a healthy diet and attitude. I am very interested to hear about your circumstances and to hear what treatments your doctors have discussed. I think that it would benefit both of us to communicate and share any information we come across.
Thank You, Ben Ridino (copy sent to email)

Hi I have AVN of my left talus. I had drilling done in July of 02. They didn’t fill the holes with any grafted bone…just drilling.
On X-ray I now show as “unremarkable” which means the drilled areas have healed, but I am still in pain.
My ortho told me it would be a year before healing would be considered complete. I have no idea if the pain is permanent or not. I have been told different answers to the same questions by the same Dr. My ankle is doing what it should be doing, in that scar cartilage has filled the drilled holes in the dead area. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

I was diagnosed with ANV in right talus in Jan 2003.. I am currently wearing a bone stimulator and ankle brace (up to my knee) There is not improvement, yet. I am hoping to see an ortho doc at John’s Hopkins. I am curious — Do you know of any good ortho docs that are familiar with AVN in talus… and what is my future.. AM I going to be disabled the rest of my life. I am really nervous about all of this.. Please respond as you are able.
    Thank you, Nancy

Hello everyone I am really interested in what kind of treatments are being done for talus avn. My husband has avn of the left talus. He had an accident 4 months ago and fell 20 ft or more while working on a bridge and broke his talus severly and his calcaneus. He had open reduction and recieved 10 screws and a steel plate and wire in his talus and 2 screws in his calcaneus. Now we are waiting to see what his out come is going to be. He has been released to do physical therapy. The doctor see’s him every 3 mths now for x-ray’s checking signs on how the avn is doing.no change yet. His last visit the doctor took the air boot away, and has him wearing a lace up brace and using a cane. We would like to hear what kind of treatments there is for the avn.

Could you please give me an update on how your AVN is doing? My husband was in a car wreck on his way to Deer Camp Nov 13, 2015 he was hit by a drunk driver and busted his ankle out of the skin. He talar was also classified as a Hawkin’s 3. I am scared because the Dr. told him that it looked like he was losing blood supply. I would really appreciate it if you could possibly give me an idea of the healing process you went through, it is hard not knowing what to expect. I really hope that your outcome was great!
