Back of leg, between calf & ankle

I’ve a nagging ache in the back of my leg which becomes very sore during & after runing. It’s below the calf muscle but well above the Achilles (which feels fine). Can anyone enlighten me as to what it is (an extension of the Achilles, perhaps?) and tell me how to fix it? Rest can only be a last resort as I’m training for the London Marathon.

    Hi, sounds like you could have a similar problem to me. To be honest mate you’ve got to completely rest the injury site, even if it means losing some of your current fitness levels. Just over 3 years ago I was advised to carry on training through my injury to a certain extent as I had some very big races coming up, with the chance of me being picked to represent England. However this just made things worse and 3 years on im still struggling, although things are starting to look a bit more positive. Just a few weeks off training could sort this injurt out for good, as you dont wanna end up having a simple calf strain for 3 years like me!

    Many thanks, Trigirl – strangely it seems to help by putting a name to the offending part! I guess it’s a wear-and-tear injury which’ll hang around for a while although it’s been more painful after running than during which isn’t such a bar to training. I’ll get the frozen peas out now…

    Sounds like the flexor digitorum longus, which feels almost like it is your Achilles but it gets sore above it, right? I used to get this, too. It would get sore during the later part of a run, then it would be sore all of the time. Probably just sore from overuse, a little tendonitis. If you absolutely can’t rest, just ice it after you run for about 10 minutes and throughout the day. Never ice before a run. If you are close to the marathon, it might help just to really back off from the running. At this point, you won’t lose anything. If you are still building your training for the marathon, then you may want to consider taking a week off just to let this rest and heal before it gets really bad. After the marathon, definitely take some time off. It should resolve itself within a few weeks after rest. If not, go get some active release therapy on it from a trained provider. Good luck in the marathon!
