Back pain history and pregnancy

(3 discussions)

Hi, I am 27 years old and want to become pregnant, but am very concerned about how my back will handle it.
I have a history of slipped discs, three to be exact. Each episode was about one and a half years apart and seemed to take longer to heal than the last.
I have not had an episode in nearly three years..knock on wood!!
I faithfully do the exercises and stretches reccommended by my physical therapist, which allowed me to avoid surgery. Do you think my back can handle a pregnancy?
What advice to you have for me?? Any information is appreciated! Thank you!

Dear Paige, There are a lot of changes that take place during pregnancy. One of the most notable is that your body produces a hormone called Relaxin. This is something that weakens the tissue that holds your pelvis together. This is done so that your pelvis can open and allow delivery. The problem is that it also affects other areas of the body with the same type of tissue. There is also weight gain associated with water retention and the added weight of the baby. Now, this all sounds bad for someone who has a history of disc problems. The truth of the matter is this: Where there is a will, there is a way. Human beings have delivered children for generations and generations. Many women have delivered children with this same type of problem. It will be more difficult for you, but not impossible. This certainly should not prevent you from trying. It will be important to remain active during the pregnancy, and to keep your abdominal and erector spinae muscles in a state of tonicity. A strong pre-natal vitamin regimen should also be incorporated. Lifting during the pregnancy should be kept to a minimum. A history of disc injuries is a very common thing, and shouldn’t prevent you from experiencing the joy of parenthood. As always, consult a physician before you increase your attempts at pregnancy. P.S. Chiropractic care during pregnancy is an incredibly effective way to manage spinal issues during pregnancy. Find a good Chiro and keep your adjustments up. Sincerely,

I have a 16 month old and since I gave birth to her have been having some significant lower back pain. I have been to see a doctor and he explained that during pregnancy the cartilage in you pelvis stretches or spreads and that mine did not go back together properly. He also stated that physical therapy could help to manipulated it back into place. Is this possible and how?
