i recently had surgery to correct brachymetatarsia. there are two optioons in correcting it (external fixator or bone graft). I went with the bone graft. they grafted bone from my heel to make my toe longer. i’m very satisfied with the results. I have two small scars that will probably fade in a couple years. going with the bone graft to correct it would be the better option if you’re weak of stomach.

How long was the process from surgery to recovery and around how much was actually covered by insurance? Thanks so much. Also how did you find your doctor?

I have the same foot condition. I was so surprised to find this website. I really would appreciate any financial informatin and on the process of healing. I read on another website that follow up treatment typcially involves keepig all weight off the surgically reapaired foot for 3 months. Is this true? Thanks so much

I had brachymetatarsia to correct my third metatarsal on my left foot.Biggest mistake ever. It didn’t really hurt just was ugly and was becoming caloused on the heel. I went with the external fixature w/bone graft. I had the first surgery in Dec 2002(put the fixator on) was off my feet until Feb 03(removed fixator and installed graft).was on crutches for 2 more months. Then a CAM boot.Just went back in to find out that the graft did not take(nonunion)and that I am suffering from Osteoparosis and stress fracture. My foot hurts a little now.May have to have more surgery.Granted my foot looks nicer but now it hurts!! The first podiatrist wanted to amputate it. Just be as informed as possible. Good luck.

If given the option between amputation or the surgical options I would try the surgical options. I wouldn’t amputate. It’s not a health hazard. I’m 33 and have had Brachymetatarsia on the 4th toe on both feet. My mother has it only on one foot and I have had 2 friends both with the same condition as my mom. I would suggest seeing another doctor. In my mind amputation is only an option in your health is in danger. I have to worry about a doctor that would suggest amputation instead of just leaving it be.

I am 18, live in Australia and just discovered my deformity is not one that I suffer alone, thanks to the Internet! I would love to know the costs involved and if the surgery is done outside of the US.

I’m having the mini-external fixator surgery to correct my left fourth toe next week. It is 100% covered by my insurance, and the doc was really great (although I had a nasty experience with a previous doc) it is NOT considered cosmetic (at least through my insurance). He said heal time will be 4-6 weeks off the foot, then another 4 weeks partially weight bearing, then I’ll be done! I will let you know how it goes. BTW, I’m a 25 year old from Seattle WA.

I recently have decided to look into surgeries to fix my 3rd, 4th and 5th toe. I would appreciate it if anyone could send me information on what their experience was like, cost of procedure and pros and cons. I am anxious to hear what your opinions are -thanks so much for the info…

I’m a 23 yr old female who has made the decision to undergo surgery to correct the 4th toe on my left foot ASAP, and (at a later date) the 3rd and 4th toes on my right foot. I was only given the option of the external fixture. Is there anyone who can explain the differance btwn the fixtures and the grafts? And maybe ease my mind about the whole procedure?

I really hate it, I’m embarassed of it, can’t wear sandls and it’s hideous but am afraid of surgery, a doctor told me not to get it because of my age and the complications that could happen also, somehting about the vascular aspects.

How old are you? Did you experience much pain during the healing process? Miss work?

I did not know what was wrong with my foot. I went to a podiatrist and he refused to repair it, I also went to an orthopaedic specialist and he wanted to remove my 3rd toe. My 3rd, 4th, and 5th toe are all short. I am so glad I know there are others who have my same problem I have. My foot has been this way since I was 6 years old.

i am only 15. have had the problem for as long as I can remember, I didn’t know what it was till a couple days ago. It was embarassing when I was little but now its just there. I don’t have pain but am concerned it will get painfull in the future.

hey – I was so excited to finally find out what I have and what it’s called. I have a short second toe on both my feet. I’ve always been embarrassed by it – but never really thought about doing too much about it. I was wondering if any of you have a problem with balance. I find that i’m falling down all the time – sometimes with awful results (just broke an ankle 2 months ago). Just got to the thinking that maybe my falling down has something to do with the short toes…Angela24 / Female / Florida

Hi! I have brachymetatarsia too! I never knew there was a name for it. I have been embarassed all my life about how my feet look but for now I don’t plan surgery. But I would love to hear more about the experiences of people who try it! So happy to meet you all.

Where did you get the surgery performed. There is a Dr. Lee in Costa Mesa that performs this surgery.

I am 40 years old and have just recently discovered my toe deformity is Brachymetatarsia. I just recently consulted a podatrist to discuss options. He has suggested amputating the fourth toe on both my feet since they are functionless at this point. Cosmetically he feels the appearance will be better. What do you think?
