broken ankle

(4 discussions)

This past MOnday I broke the non weight barring bone in my rt amkle… it was splinted in the er with instrcutions to see my fmaily dr.
Today my dr. perscribed an aircast sport-stirrup. I am afraid of this course of action, my aunt just suffered a smiliar break and this stir-up was the LAST thing her Dr ordered, not the first.
The instructons say to wear a show, how can I wriggle in to a tennis show when the break is only 3 days old? Help!

With a fracture you want to stabalize it….thus the air cast. It is the first thing we professionals prescribe to support the joint and prevent further damamge. If you can’t fit into the shoes you have now go to Kmart or Payless and get a bigger and wider shoe that will fit for now. Elevate and ice for pain and edema control.

My concern is that everthing I have read, anyone I have come in contact with are suprised that I am not in a cast, I have managed to get a splnt on the leg instead of going with the sport stirrup air cast at this time. Had I been placed in a cast, I could be off of the crutches in 2 weeks, but am being told I will remian on crutches for 4 weeks with this regime

I know this is very, very late, but just in case this turns up on anyone else’s Google results like it did on mine 😉 I still wanted to throw in my 2 cents. I had a very similar break, I fractured my left fibula at the syndesmosis (Weber Type B). The ER put me in the splint, and the orthopedist I went to the next day was surprised that they hadn’t let me put any weight on it at all. He put me in a walking boot, but not the one with the plastic up front, this one allows a little bit of flexing but not much, since it’s softer, and had me come back in 3 weeks. I walked for those 3 weeks putting weight on the foot and using the crutches for additional support when I was out and about (i.e. shopping or at school) and not using anything at home. After my 3 week checkup he gave me the air stirrup to wear at home and at night, and to wean myself into wearing during the day. I have found since the beginning that walking actually helped me more than anything. Laying down and sitting down was what made it sore… When I walked around it, felt better. I’ve also read that weight bearing encourages ossification of the cartilage fibers that form at the fracture site.
