Broken ankle = Long leg cast?

I recently broke my ankle and the doctor put me in a full leg cast.
Is this normal treatment for a broken ankle?
I thought that I would get a short leg cast.
The doc said I will get a short leg cast in a few weeks.
Can you explain why I didn’t get one now?

The type of fracture you had may necessitate more immobilization.
