broken calcaneal

(2 discussions)

My husband broke his heel in six places plus he has a few more small breaks, he is to go in for surgery this week, how long does it usually take a break like this to totally heal, and how long until we know if he will ever walk correctly? Thanks,Sandi

I had the same break except in only one place. My surgeon told me it would be two full years after the break before I know if I will be able to walk without pain. It has been six months and I am using orthodic with much pain. I can only stay on my feet for about one hour. I hop this helps. It does not look like many doctors respond to this site, but I hope one does for this question.

I shattered my Calcaneal 1 1/2 years ago and had a titanium plate and screws inserted to bring it all back together. Non weight bearing for a few months, removeable cast, crutches for 4 months, plenty of physio, fairly severe pain for a year. Very slow to mend, take plenty of non-impact based exercise to mobilise it. Depending on the severity, it can be a long haul with pain caused by friction between the bones of the foot rather than bone itself (eg I experience rubbing between calcaneal bone and the Talus bone above). I was told to expect more than a year to heal, which was true and it has needed a lot of care. Don’t know if this is of any help. If it is, feel free to reply, I didn’t get much advice about what to expect from my surgeon.Sean
