broken pinky

(3 discussions)

Hello,My son broke his pinky a couple of weeks ago.
The first time I went to the doctor, they put him in a splint cast for 10 days due to the swelling. After getting x-rays a second time, they said it didn’t look like it was healing correctly but they decided to put the hard cast on.
He wore this one 7 days.
We x-rayed again yesterday and they said it was definitely healing incorrectly (it is the top of the pinky (they call it the growth bone)and it is 20 degrees crooked off a straight line).
They decided to put it again in a cast and talk with some other colleagues to decide what to do next.
Thay don’t know if they should rebrake the bone and reset it or let it grow without the cast hoping that it will grow somewhat straight.
My question is should they rebrake it now, after all that has been done? Do you think it would grow normally without problems if it not rebroken?

If it’s off by 20 degrees now most likely it will be off when the bone grows. Why did they recast when it was not healing properly the 2nd time? I think the best thing is to let them set it properly…not sure why they didn’t do this the first time!! By casting a bone that is 20 degrees off will not correct the bone alignment. Maybe you should try to negotiate some sort of refund due to all the trouble they put you and your son through and not getting it right the first time.

I broke my pinky finger, xrays and a charming doctor told me that I had a “bubbly bone”, he was going to refer me to a hand surgeon to insert a bone graft. My questions are: Is this an outpatient type of surgery? How long does it take to heal after surgery? Will I have to wear a cast again? (please say no to that last one)Thank you

I just hand some drunk guy that punched out his girlfriend litterly smash my fingers in the front door. lets just say that my pinky took it home. I mean it is broken..no if ands or buts. I can bend it 90 degrees. I iced it right away..within seconds.. I also made a splint out of a pen that is very straight. pain is minimal, for now. i’m icing it 10mins on and 20mins off. I also keep it above my heart… It seems to help. I took some apenicilin. insights please. what would a dr. do?
