Broken Sesamoid Bone

(7 discussions)

The tip of my sesamoid bone in my left foot has broken off and is floating around in my foot. Sometimes the pain is excrutiating and other times is bearable. I had the same thing happen to my right foot and had surgery to remove the bone. What causes these bones to break?

My 15 year daughter broke her sesamoid bone in 3 months ago. After casts, boots and eventually being able to walk with no pain, she was told she could get back to volleyball. Well, it is now broken again and she is in a cast and wheelchair. What are her chances of a complete recovery? Is it a good sign she was walking with no pain at one point? Maybe, she just went back to early.

I broke my sesamoid bone in my left foot four years ago. I eventually had it removed after boots and lots of other forms of trying to mend it. I am still experiencing pain to this day. I went through a long while of physical therapy and anything that could happen after the surgery, did. I had tendonitis in my ankle and foot due to the long wearing of the boot, tore a tendon, a large amount of scar tissue build up,morton’s neuromas and some other things… There really isn’t anything more that they can do. I am not walking correctly thus my gait is completely off. NOw, I am experiencing pain in my right foot, same area. I am hoping it isn’t broken. I will be heading to the dr on Monday. Anyway, I am back to exercising but am only really allowed to use the elliptical and bike. I still have pain, but at this point it is apart of my life. Good luck to all who have it removed!

What type of physical therapy should my boyfriend be doing to heal his sesamoid bone? He feels like there is nothin there in his foot cause he had surgery and they took the small piece that was broken out…but that was september of last year….and now he is in spring football and still can’t plant make cuts without stumblin. What should he do? Will he ever get back to normal?

I lived with a broken sesamoid for almost four years before I had to have surgery. I have had just about every thing done and nothing helped. The shots lasted for a few days but the pain would always come back. And from walking on the side of my foot for so long, it makes it hard to walk properly now. If you think surgery will slove your problems, it will not. I lost movement in my adjoining two toes and the feeling in the bottom of my foot. The pain is less now but I still have pain and because I can’t feel the ball of my foot I often step wrong and hurt it. At times it feels like I am walking on the ball of my foot. Just remember that you will give up something to have the pain from the break to go away, atleast enough to life a somewhat normal life. After surgery I had to pick up marbels with my toe so try and see if it helps with movement.

I cheer competition and my foot started killing me and I never knew what it was, so I went to the Sports Therapist and they told me My Sesamoid Bone was broken in half. It really affects my cheering, because it’s so hard to tumble, stunt and run on it. I was thinking about getting the surgery to remove it but i’m not sure if I should? I’m just sick of it!

i have to have surgery on the 10th feb for a crushed sesamoid bone in my right foot. plus it is also split in half. Most of the time it is nagging pain and not sure what the cause is. probs soccer. The doctor has to fuse the bones together and may have to bone graft. I will be in hospital for 4 days, a leg cast for 6 weeks and a walker boot for 5 to 6 weeks. A 12 month full recovery and a little scar.

Didn’t find out it was broke until a year later. Showed up on xray. I’ve been walking on it since it happened. It hurts and swells all the time. Can the lose bone be removed? A doctor told me no.
