Brostrom Ankle Ligament Repair

(4 discussions)

I had the Brostrom procedure 2 weeks ago and after 12 days had the partial plaster removed and was put into a pneumatic walker. It seems far more painful than before and near the site of the operation I have developed a small, relatively pain-free ‘click’ (not the ‘crack’ I used to get before in the joint area. I’m not sure if this is normal and haven’t managed to speak to the surgeon yet. Also, does anyone have any advice on pain relief – I weaned myself off the codeine ASAP, but that was definitely the most effective pain-killer. I’m looking for something suitable to take at night, as this is when the ankle tends to hurt the most. Thank you, udith

I had surgery on 3/7—-2 ligaments repaired—ATF and Calcaneofibular, drilling of a Talardome OCD Lesion, and clearance of the sural nerve. I have an incision below the right ankle bone, and 2 holes across the joint from the arthroscopy. Solid cast for 7 1/2 wks., then graduated to aircast with 1 crutch—- 2 mos. PT. Tried to do too much, and sprained newly repaired ankle on 6/12. Cut off from PT by Vytra Insurance, been medically unsupervised since 7/5. Have done minimal at home since I sprained it. Walked around in pool as per my therapist 7/3 and did a few heel lifts/leg lifts—can do 10 miles on bike path. Why does it still really hurt, and require still using crutch for my stairs?? Live on the 3rd floor—each flight 14 steps—-Still need aircast and 1 crutch to get around without pain. Joint feels locked. Can’t point and flex same amount as on L foot. Allergic to anti-inflammatories, and sensitive to pain killers. Have been taking 250 mg. Magnesium and am tolerating it. Reaction to Ca,Mg,Zinc and to Chondroitin Sulfate/Glucosamine combo so I am just taking the Mg.
Is this normal for this healing to take sooo long??
    Please advise. Thank you!!

Hello.. I had an Evans repair on my Left ankle may 2003- it did not work that well. My Doc had me up and going as soon as I could… Yes with tons of pain killers also. He could not find out why I was still having so much pain so he sent me to another doc after 6 months. I walked into the nest surgons office and he wanted to know how long was I out of a cast. I said I never had one and was told to get up an go as soon as I could. I guess I messed up a ton of stuff in my ankle…. I went to another surgeon and he did a Brostrom on May 2014.I spent 8 weeks on a non weight bearing cast and 2 in a weight bearing walking cast. Then 6 weeks in a fracture boot and now I am starting a 6 month PT program and I am also wearing an air cast all my waking hours. I am not sure what is after that. My foot did not touch the floor for 8 weeks… I asked my new Doc is that was normal to be off it so long and he said yes. christine

hi christine, in january this year I was diagnosed with chronic ankle instability.in september I had the brostom-evans surgery with a 6week cast(which turned into 8weeks)non weight bearing gradually with more weight added. I have not recovered yet as I am still in a lot of pain & still barely walking. I have an aircast brace which I use outdoors & this causes more pain. I am yet to convince my doctors that the new ligaments are too tight. I hope you have fully recovered now. jazz

I’m scheduled to have a Brostrom Ankle Ligament Repair in about 3 weeks. I work as a home health physical therapist. So obviously part of my job is driving. I know while I have my plaster splint on I can’t drive. But do you know how long after that can I drive? I drive about 150 miles a day. Can anyone tell me the typical after surgery restrictions? I was told 10 days in plaster splint with possible toe touch and then I think a month in the walking boot.
