burning, stinging in ankle/foot

For the past few months I have an odd, sudden, brief burning and stinging sensation in my outer ankle/top of foot all the way down through the fourth toe. It just lasts for a few seconds at a time but happens several times a day. I have no history of foot problems, I’m not overweight, and I don’t stand all day. I do have a long history of back pain, however. I’ve limited my exercise to walking a couple miles a day hoping my syptoms would go away, but they only have become more frequent. Should I see a doctor for this? If so what type? And will they do anything other than shrug their shoulders?

A neurologist is my first recommendation. A podiatrist might also be helpful.
