Calcaneal Apophysitis – my 10 year old son has it
My son was just diagnosed with Calcaneal Apophysitis.
I wanted opinions on whether over-the-counter or over-the-internet shoe inserts worked as well as the expensive custom made orthotics. Any recommendations for brand names would be greatly appreciated!

The short answer is yes to everything works. Basically if the heel is elevated and cushioned then usually that is helpful. There are patients with abnormal biomechanics that a custom orthotic is the best way to go. In my office I use the Silipos heel cups for the kids who are athletic and have calcaneal apophysitis. I do not like the Bauerfeind heel cups as much because of the way they are angled.
