Chondromalicia

Please help – I have a knee that grinds and has mild pain.
I am a runner of about 20 miles a week (5’9″ 165 lbs). A few years ago I went to an orthopedic and she did x-rays.
She saw no arthritis on the x-rays. But of course you cannot see under the knee cap with an x-ray – I don’t think.
She diagnosed me with patellar tendonitis.
I was given PT that included some rubber band exercises and one legged air squats.
My knee seems to be getting worse, especially the grinding.
I think I have chondromalicia. My question:1.)Are one legged squats bad because they really strengthen my legs?2.)Is my running doomed?3.)Should I get orthodics?4.)Should I wear shoes that control pronation?
