Colds

I am getting a quite bad cold, and i need some fast and effective ways to shake it off as it is cross-country season, and i cant miss it. Do you reccomend training throughout it, or a rest, and is there any wonder products out there to get rid of it.
Any suggestions would be great!

I find that Echinacia, vitamin C and zinc are the only supplements that make a difference for me. Get them before you need them so you can take them from the first symptoms untill you feel fine again. But the most effective treatment for a cold if you don’t already know is to significantly increase your water intake and get more rest.

    Good luck )

I agree – intense training should be avoided when an athlete has a cold, however very gentle exercise may help a little.

If the athlete is comfortable at running 10 miles then a 1 mile jog is hardly intense training.

One supplement I took when training exceptionally hard that I felt helped me avoid this type of illness is glutamine or acetyle glutamine. Glutamine is an amino acid that is abundant in the human body. If an athlete has a cold, or is under a lot of stress the natural levels of glutamine drop. It is thought that supplementing can help avoid illness.

Not much you can do about a cold, but let it run it’s course! Lots of rest will give your body more strength to fight it off.

If it was me, I’d rest as much as possible, and if I had an event take Anadin Extra during it to help disguse the symptoms!

On another note, please don’t let this scare you, but it is true although very uncommon. Just something to aware of!
I saw a documentary once about a girl who trained when she had a sore throat. There is a particular bug that is very, very, very rare apparently, but causes a sore throat, and if you train while you have it, as training reduces your imune system because your body is fighting to recover from the effort you are making, the bug attacks your nervous system, and basically disables you! This girl couldn’t even walk for a long time, she had to completly rebuild herself. She did it though!!!
I must admit I always carry on with a sore throat, (it’s a very rare bug!) but it’s always in the back of my mind!!!

Anyway, good luck, hopfully you will recover quick!

    Sarah.
