Cortisone shot

(5 discussions)

i injured my wrist two years ago. and the doctors still can’t figure out what is wrong with it. I have seen an orthopedic surgon to an occupational therapist. I recived the cortisone shot about a week ago and it hurt really badly and brused my wrist as well. and a week later it still hurts and is still brused. nothing I do is making this better. should my wrist still be hurting and bruised after a week witht the shot?

The typical cortisone injection for treatment of inflammation following trauma or surgery is Kenalog, which is a hyrdocortisone compound along with an anesthetic (Marcaine) in a 1/1000 strength which when injected subcutaneously can cause hematoma (bruising)as the drugs are viscous and slowly absorbed in soft tissue capillaries. Treatment for the bruising and soreness should be like any other bruise; cold packs, anti-inflammatory agents like ibuprophen or naproxyn (Advil or Aleve) and gentle massage. If you feel hardening of tissue around the injection site or if the bruising and pain are not improved in a week, see your doctor.

I had a cortisone shot injected into my thumb joint in December of 2017.It helped a great deal with the arthritic pain in the joint. I have considered having the joint surgery but decided to try cortisone first. Had a shot of it in March 2017 and it worked wonderfully. No bruising. Then again in Dec 2017. Almost immediately I noticed bruising from the large vein in that area. My doctor, who is a well respected hand surgeon, told me that cortisone thins the vein and skin so this bruising can happen and in fact, last up to a year or more. I barely touch the area and I bleed out under the skin. I look like a person taking blood thinners. Is there anything I can do to make this go away or get better? The doctor tells me there is nothing I can do but wait. Is this dangerous to be bruised every day? I will never have cortisone again.

About a month ago I was given a cortisone shot for pain in my right shoulder. The injection was on the back of my shoulder. Shortly after the injection, I developed a ring shaped bruise a little over two inches in circumference directly opposite the injection site on the front of my shoulder. Could the bruising be from the injection?

Sorry–I changed “circumference” to “diameter”. This note accurately describes my problem Could the bruising be from the injection?
